Great Sand Dunes National Park - Colorado
July 21-22, 2008
My housemate and I took a week long vacation and headed for the southwest Colorado. The first stop was The Great Sand Dunes National Park. It was my first time there and we spent two nights at the campsite. It really is a remarkable place -- several hundred foot dunes with the Rockies in the background. Truly amazing.

One of the neat things about GSDNP is that sand and vegetation co-exist which brings about great contrast.

With the snow runoff in the Spring, Medano Creek saturates the sand at the base of the dunes thus causing the water to flow on top rather than below like it does throughout the rest of the year. Also, because of the constantly shifting sand, the creek features waves which is very unique to this area.

The afternoon clouds roll in to create more drama around the tallest sand dunes in the country.

Playing around with the long morning shadows.
